Now that Amazon has once again launched a new version of the Echo Spot, we are going to review the differences and main characteristics of the new generation compared to the first version of the alarm clock speaker with Alexa. It is important to remember that what was Amazon's first speaker with a circular screen has been discontinued for years, so this new version will be quite in demand.
Echo Spot 2024 vs Echo Spot 2017
Although aesthetically they are quite similar to being a hemispherical speaker that looks like an alarm clock, the new generation of the Echo Spot has a 2,8 inch rectangular screen, leaving behind the round screen that so characterized the speaker. This allows several things, simplifying manufacturing with a cheaper screen and placing the speaker on the front face so that the sound is better projected towards the user.
The drawback is that aesthetically it could be detrimental for some, since the round screen gave it a rather striking appearance, despite do not cover the entire front full.
Something that the 2024 version loses is the front camera. The new Echo Spot will not allow you to make video calls with Alexa or use the video surveillance function, so all functions related to the front camera disappear.
Where there are interesting new features is in the internal speaker, which goes from 1,4 inches to 1,73 inches, offering better sound quality and greater clarity. Of course, unlike the original version, now 3,5 millimeter output not included, so you won't be able to connect an external wired speaker (although Bluetooth connectivity is included so you can pair an external speaker).
In terms of size, the 2024 version is a little larger, going from 10,4 x 9,7 x 9,1 centimeters of the Echo Spot 2017 to 11,3 x 11,1 x 10,3 centimeters of the Echo Spot 2024, and curiously it is lighter, since it drops from 420 grams to 405 grams.
The new version will also be available in three available colors, choosing between black, glacier white and ocean blue.
Is it worth changing the Echo Spot for the new one?
If you already have an Echo Spot (2017), you most likely don't need to change it. Of course, this model used to suffer from screen burn-in after months of use (the numbers on the watch's wallpaper tend to stay marked), so perhaps that is the reason for the change.
For the rest, although it sounds much better, there are no important reasons to change from one model to another, and if you usually make video calls, you have no other option than to stay with the old one (unless you make the jump to an Echo Show). .
