Given that Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S10 will feature extremely narrow bezels thanks to the in-display front camera , the question remained to be seen to what extent the manufacturer would be able to conceal the earpiece speaker used for calls. Its placement would be key to gaining an extra millimeter of screen space, and all indications suggest that it will eventually disappear completely. But where will it be then? Like the front camera, it will be absorbed by the screen.
A screen with sound
As commented on SamMobile, Samsung will offer one more extra function on its next screens. In addition to the camera hole, the panel will have a vibration system that will be responsible for reproducing sounds through the screen itself. The technology would answer to the name of Sound on Display, and it will be something common in the next OLED screens of the manufacturer.
It's a solution seemingly similar to the one we saw with Xiaomi's Mi MIX 2 , which also minimized bezels and concealed the speaker within the screen itself using a solenoid-based system that vibrates the display. A similar approach can also be found in Sony's high-end OLED TVs with their Acoustic Surface Audio+ technology.
In search of full screen
All these technologies share the same goal: to make the screen as large as possible by maximizing the available surface area. And while the Galaxy S10 shows promise, it seems we won't see this technology in action until the next flagship phone. That could mean the Galaxy Note 10 will be the first to feature it, especially considering the S10 leaks that have surfaced in recent weeks.
For example, the screen protectors that are appearing still have a notch at the top, which would mean that the speaker would still be present at the top of the phone, so the Galaxy S10 would continue to use the usual speaker.
A new fashion that is coming
With CES just around the corner, something tells us that the Las Vegas trade show will be full of demonstrations of this type of screen, as some Chinese manufacturers and even LG itself are expected to present some prototypes with this type of integrated sound technology.
