New patents registered by Xiaomi have been discovered, revealing the ideas the Chinese company currently has in development. While registering a patent doesn't guarantee the product will actually be released—the company primarily does this to prevent others from stealing the concept—it often provides valuable insights into what's coming next in a manufacturer's product catalog.
At a time when it seems everything has already been invented and the next step is inevitably the foldable phone , Xiaomi still seems to want to push the boundaries of the "conventional smartphone" with much more achievable ("practical" is another matter ) and possibly less expensive ideas than folding a screen. Among these is a phone with all four edges of the screen curved , resulting in a complete " full view " display, without any top or bottom bezels.
To give you a better idea of ​​what Xiaomi intends to do, the folks at Let's go Digital have created an image below showing what the phone could look like if Xiaomi were to bring this concept to life. We've already seen side bezels quite a bit, thanks to phones like the Samsung Galaxy S9 or the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, but seeing the same effect on the top and bottom edges is much more striking, and dare I say, appealing.
Buttons are completely absent from this design, with only a USB-C port present. There isn't even a front-facing camera – which is quite surprising – although there is a rear cutout that should house a pair of rear sensors.

Just days before this filing, Xiaomi took the plunge and filed another patent application: a smartphone screen with not one, but two holes . As you know, the demise of the notch has led to a shift towards the hole-punch display—think Huawei Nova 4 , Samsung Galaxy A8s , or Honor View 20 —so Xiaomi seems to be aiming for this concept, but with two of them.
Currently, Xiaomi doesn't have any phones with a hole-punch display in its catalog. Some rumors suggest that the Mi 9 could be the first to feature this design, although there are no leaked images to confirm this. It could also opt for a retractable solution like the Mi Mix 3 , or even surprise us all with a phone featuring two holes in its screen, as seen in the patents—which, by the way, if you look closely, show four different ways to position two front-facing cameras , along with the proximity and light sensors.
