No one remembered Willy Wonka until he reappeared in our lives with a new trailer. Many thought the story might be a flop and were particularly disappointed with Timothée Chalamet , who seemed unable to quite embody the character. Luckily, it appears that it was just a poor choice of scenes for the first promotional video: now the critics have seen the entire film and have completely changed their minds…

Wonka or how the mythical character was forged

After several versions of the wacky and eccentric Willy Wonka , a new film arrives that presents us with nothing less than his origins. Starring Hollywood's hottest actor (read: Chalamet), the film lets us explore the youth of this master chocolatier and how his sweet universe began.

British director Paul King , known for works such as Paddington and Paddington 2 , takes the reins this time to tell the story of how Wonka, after a long journey, arrives in a town where he decides to open his own shop. What he doesn't expect is to encounter the obstacle of the Chocolate Cartel, made up of stuffy merchants who oppose any competition.

The first trailer released for the film didn't seem to excite the public too much - we included ourselves in that group - but the second trailer , above these lines and which also featured Hugh Grant's Oompa-Loompa, did generate much more interest (and hopes).

Now the specialized press has had the opportunity to see the film, so we can get a better idea of ​​what King's proposal has in store for us. And, hey, it seems things have gotten interesting…

First reviews about Wonka

Several media outlets in the US have had access to the Wonka film, allowing them to share their impressions after the screening—of which Fotogramas provides a good summary . Among them are the statements of Wendy Lee Szany, a film journalist and contributor to various publications, who asserts that " Wonka is a delight ":

«[…] I loved seeing how the story of young Willy Wonka unfolds. Timothée Chalamet brought the perfect amount of charm, naivete and wonder. Hugh Grant steals every scene he appears in. Keegan Michael-Key was underused. Don't go see this movie without buying chocolate!

Germain Lussier, from io9 and Gizmodo , is a little more restrained in his enthusiasm, stating that its protagonist is the main reason to see the film , which, while not "that good," is enjoyable:

«Timothée Chalamet is the only reason to watch Wonka. He is endlessly charming and fun to watch. The movie he's immersed in isn't that good but he enjoys it. The story and tone fight each other leaving everything a little confusing. And yet he is full of joy and the songs are delicious. »

Specialized journalist Drew Taylor, a contributor to the New York Times and Collider, praises the director's work and the beautiful fantasy world he has created with this film:

«Wonka is a delicious confection, at times salty, at times sweet, but always visually dazzling and emotionally rich. Paul King proves once again that he is one of our most exciting filmmakers, creating a world unafraid to go to the dark and strange places that Roald Dahl would go. »

Editor Griffin Schiller also applauds King's work , stating that he has captured the essence of Dahl 100%.
