Miyamoto with the gorilla Doney Kong in the new expansion of the park in Japan

The Nintendo universe continues its relentless expansion at its Japanese theme park with the arrival of a new themed area dedicated to one of its most iconic characters, Donkey Kong . The popular ape will soon have his own section within Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan , starting this December . Here's everything you can expect in the new Donkey Kong Country.

A dive into the jungle

The Donkey Kong themed area offers a variety of details that promise to make visitors feel as if they're inside one of the classic video games in the series. Upon entering, visitors are immediately immersed in the character's iconic jungle, transitioning from the colorful blocks typical of Mario to an environment filled with vegetation and structures inspired by the famous gorilla's universe. The game's classic soundtrack is also key, playing throughout the attraction.

Among the highlights of this new real-world expansion is the opportunity to visit Donkey Kong's Tree House and the Golden Temple , both key elements of the game Donkey Kong Country Returns . To make the experience even more interactive, visitors can use NFC wristbands (just as they have been doing throughout the rest of the park) to discover hidden secrets and collectibles, such as the letters that spell "KONG," explain the organizers.

The main attraction, however, is undoubtedly the Mine Cart Madness roller coaster . This ride, inspired by the mine cart levels of Donkey Kong Country , will take visitors on a thrilling race along a track, making them feel suspended in mid-air and simulating freefall jumps for added excitement. Miyamoto, the character's creator—whom you can see in the video below—has assured that the experience will be suitable even for those who aren't big fans of traditional roller coasters, as it's an attraction designed to be enjoyed by the whole family.

You'll also find rhythm-based minigames inspired by the classic GameCube title Donkey Konga , where up to three players can play giant drums to unlock hidden surprises throughout the park. And of course, there are food stalls, perfectly themed and offering treats inspired by the game's characters. There's also an exclusive shop called Funky's Fly 'n' Buy , stocked with all kinds of official merchandise that will delight collectors.

Expansion to other parks

Although for now the Donkey Kong area will only open in Japan—whose park opened in 2021 and was a huge success—its arrival at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida , within Universal Epic Universe , which will open in May 2025, has already been confirmed. It is also expected to arrive in the future at Universal Studios parks in other parts of the world, such as Los Angeles.
