The new Star Wars trailer has undoubtedly been one of the biggest releases of April, but right now there's far more talk about one fan of the saga than the video itself. We're referring to Eric Butts , a man who recorded his reaction to the trailer, and whose video has generated so much criticism that even Mark Hamill (Skywalker) has come to his defense. This is his story.

On April 13th, Disney finally treated us to one of the most anticipated trailers of 2019. We're referring to the trailer for what was previously known as Star Wars: Episode IX , a film set to premiere in December of this year, which has finally revealed its official title. In case you missed it, here it is:
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be the name of this ninth installment, which is expected to close another chapter in this legendary saga. Between the story's huge legion of fans and the hype that Disney itself has cultivated, it's understandable that we were all excited and nervous, although probably few reached the level of Eric Butts.
This 41-year-old YouTuber has a modest channel on the platform where he usually uploads unboxing videos of geeky toys, as well as recordings of his reactions to trailers for movies and video games he likes. As a big Star Wars fan, Eric decided to record himself watching the trailer for The Rise of Skywalker for the first time and uploaded it to his channel without expecting or imagining the impact it would have. As you've seen, Eric gets so emotional he ends up crying over the Star Wars footage, something that has earned him a wave of insults and derogatory comments from people who call him soft, a geek , and say his reaction is too childish. The American media itself has fueled this opinion, publishing articles that question his reaction, the YouTuber's mental maturity, and whether it's normal to get so worked up over a trailer. In a matter of days, poor Eric sadly became the laughingstock of America.
Fortunately, not everyone thinks his reaction is absurd (or if they do, they at least don't believe he deserves such treatment). Among his defenders is none other than Mark Hamill , yes, the actor who plays Skywalker , who responded to some of the numerous tweets mocking the YouTuber by asking why anyone should ridicule another person who is simply showing their passion and enjoyment for something.

Hamill even addressed Eric, publicly thanking him for sharing his reaction and for making his work on the film seem more valuable. "It was inspiring," the actor said.
He wasn't the only one. The official New York Comic Con account also joined Hamill and encouraged Eric to stay true to himself: "Remember that the geek community is with you. Keep doing your thing."

Even Gary Whitta , screenwriter of Rogue One, wanted to show his support: "Seeing his total joy remains one of my favorite memories of being involved with this film. The passion of fans like Eric IS EXACTLY WHY WE MAKE MOVIES."
