In Spain, AstraZeneca and Microsoft have formalized a collaboration to accelerate the adoption of technologies artificial intelligence in health, digital health and advanced analytics in the healthcare system. The agreement establishes a common framework for deploying solutions in real-world clinical settings.
The initiative seeks attention more personalized, predictive and sustainable, focusing on interoperability, efficiency, and data security, and supported by cooperation between companies, healthcare professionals, and public institutions.
Scope of the alliance in the Spanish healthcare system
The pact includes lines of work in research and innovation, clinical use cases and data science, in addition to the integration of digital technologies in hospitals and health centers in our country.
Both companies plan to collaborate with professionals, startups and administrations to develop scalable solutions at the national or regional level, prioritizing the healthcare impact and sustainability of the system.
The objectives include strengthen interoperability between systems, optimize workflows and increase clinical anticipation capacity through AI models applied to structured and unstructured data.
This is a scheme of public-private partnership which seeks to translate digital evidence into practice, with evaluable projects aligned with the priorities of regional health services.
Tools already in place: Apto EMR and Echo
“Apto EMR”, developed with Pangaea Data, uses AI to detect patients at risk based on electronic medical records and clinical guidelines, with applications in pathologies such as COPD or chronic kidney disease.
The system analyzes structured information (laboratories, medication) and unstructured information (reports and medical notes) to facilitate early diagnosis and proactive monitoring, improving decision-making in consultation.
“Echo”, created together with the Spanish startup Recog, automates the clinical documentation from the conversation Doctor-patient relationship. In the reported tests, it reduces writing time in consultations by up to 44,7% and increases the quality of records, with an average rating of 8,12/10 for accuracy and usefulness.
Both solutions are deployed on Microsoft Azure, which provides security, scalability, and interoperability, as well as analytics and machine learning services that comply with European health regulations regarding data protection.

An innovation ecosystem based in Madrid
The AstraZeneca Innovation Hub in Madrid reinforces this collaboration as a space for open innovation, where 18 startups and projects are already participating, aimed at improving the health outcomes of thousands of patients in Spain.
According to its innovation team, cooperation with Microsoft accelerates the development of digital solutions and consolidates a more predictive, efficient and patient-centered care model.
