The German airline group has confirmed that its first aircraft equipped with Starlink's high-speed satellite internet system will begin operating on August 19. This is a Lufthansa Airbus A320neo, which will be the first to offer this technology on board. The company plans to extend the installation to its entire fleet of 850 aircraft by 2029.
This initiative represents a significant step in the group's digitalization strategy, which aims to offer a more connected travel experience. Starlink's technology, based on low-Earth orbit satellites, enables browsing speeds that in many cases surpass home internet connections. Passengers will be able to enjoy streaming, cloud-based work, and other data-intensive applications during their flight.
A free service for frequent travelers
The new Wi-Fi will be free for all Miles & More loyalty program members and Travel ID users, regardless of their travel class. This initiative aims to reward the loyalty of frequent customers and facilitate connectivity for all passengers. Furthermore, the service is sponsored by Mastercard, which already collaborated with the group on the previous FlyNet system.
The terms of service, developed based on passenger surveys, include the requirement to use headphones for multimedia content, a ban on voice or video calls, and restrictions on live streaming from the aircraft. These rules aim to ensure a pleasant experience in the cabin and have been well received by frequent flyers.
Expansion to all airlines in the group

In addition to Lufthansa, the other airlines in the holding company are finalizing preparations to incorporate this technology. These include SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, ITA Airways, Edelweiss, Discover Airlines, Air Dolomiti, Lufthansa City Airlines, and Eurowings. They will all begin receiving the equipment gradually, with the goal of having the entire fleet operational by 2029.
The group's Chief Commercial Officer, Dieter Vranckx, has stated that connectivity is now an essential part of the premium experience they offer. In his remarks, he emphasized that the product promise is not limited to seating or menus, but that today, high-speed internet access is fundamental for an exceptional journey. This vision reflects the group's commitment to continuous innovation.
Starlink expands in global aviation

Starlink's solution is already being deployed by other international airlines, such as Emirates, Qatar Airways, the IAG group, Singapore Airlines, and Wizz Air , as well as US carriers like American Airlines. This widespread adoption demonstrates the industry's confidence in low-Earth orbit satellite technology, which offers reduced latency and greater transmission capacity compared to traditional systems.
With this initiative, the Lufthansa Group becomes the largest airline group in Europe to equip its fleet with this modern internet service. The company has invested significantly in aircraft refurbishment and product improvements to offer a seamless digital experience on all its flights, both short and long-haul.
In short, the arrival of Starlink at Lufthansa marks a turning point in air connectivity. Passengers will be able to enjoy fast and reliable internet, with the added convenience of free access for frequent flyer program members. The expansion to the entire fleet and the other airlines in the group guarantees that this experience will be available to millions of travelers in the coming years.
