The foldable phone market continues to slowly gain popularity, and Huawei doesn't intend to miss out. The company has already released its attractive Mate X6 , a smartphone that stands out for its appealing design with a flexible screen without sacrificing performance. We've spent several days testing it, and here's what we can tell you . Is it really worth investing in a phone like this?
Design and construction: refinement in every fold
The Huawei Mate X6 is a clear evolution of the Mate X5, with certain improvements in its design and functionality. Its premium aesthetic is reflected in finishes like the vegan leather (very pleasant to the touch), which offers an elegant touch and also prevents fingerprints during use. When unfolded, it measures just 4,6 mm thick , making it one of the thinnest in its category, but when closed, it's also incredibly thin (9,85 mm), resulting in one of the most manageable and convenient devices to store that I've owned in the foldable phone family.
Its improved hinge not only provides robustness but also almost completely eliminates the visible crease on the inner panel—though it's still noticeable. Huawei claims this hinge can withstand hundreds of thousands of folds, guaranteeing long-term durability , and at 239 grams , it's a remarkably lightweight device.
Screens: a pleasant visual experience
The Huawei Mate X6 features two high-quality displays that stand out for their sharpness and fluidity. The 6,45-inch external display, with OLED technology and a 120Hz refresh rate , reaches an incredible peak brightness of 2.500 nits , making it ideal for outdoor use.
On the other hand, the internal screen offers an incredibly comfortable 7,93 inches , making it perfect for multitasking, reading, or multimedia consumption. I must admit that I'm not particularly a fan of this type of format, and yet, this Mate X6 has changed my mind, thanks mainly to the spaciousness it provides without sacrificing the device's portability.
While its maximum brightness of 1.800 nits is slightly lower than the external display, it's still more than enough for comfortable viewing in various lighting conditions. Both screens are protected with Kunlun Glass 2 , providing greater resistance to scratches and impacts.
The thin-edged design also maximizes viewing space, and a fairly discreet crease helps to achieve a good user experience in this regard.
Cameras: outstanding in a foldable
Huawei consistently delivers excellent photography, and the Mate X6 is no exception. Its camera system is led by a 50MP main sensor with an f/1.4 aperture, alongside a 40MP ultra-wide-angle lens and a 48MP telephoto lens. For selfies and video calls, there's also an 8MP front-facing camera.
Both the main sensor and the telephoto lens perform quite well , making them some of the best features of this phone. Foldable phones have often been criticized for sacrificing other qualities to focus solely on the screen, but in this Mate X6, photographic quality is guaranteed with excellent daytime shots boasting fantastic detail, good nighttime performance, and a very capable 4x optical zoom. The wide-angle lens is the weakest point this time around, but overall, we can say it's one of the best cameras we've seen on a foldable phone.
Performance: Good optimization despite limitations
Equipped with the Kirin 9020 processor , the Huawei Mate X6 offers smooth and efficient performance. While it's not the most powerful processor on the market, it pairs well with 12GB of RAM, ensuring a fast experience when multitasking and running demanding applications. My biggest issue here? The lack of 5G connectivity, a drawback considering its price and the current competition in the market.
With the custom EMUI 15 skin, based on Android 12, the phone moves smoothly, handling multitasking with the ability to open several floating apps, split the screen, and interact between them intuitively. It's a shame that we're once again faced with the shadow of Google's limitations, making it more complicated (though by no means impossible, thanks to the integration of apps like Aurora Store , which has mitigated this limitation) to use many of the apps we're used to.
Battery and charging: autonomy that meets
The Huawei Mate X6 features a 5.110 mAh battery , offering a battery life that could last almost a day and a half with moderate use , provided the internal screen isn't overused. With intensive use, as expected, battery life is reduced, but it's still acceptable for a foldable phone, easily lasting a full day.
As for charging , it supports wired charging speeds of up to 66W and wireless charging up to 50W . This allows the device to reach 50% charge in just 16 minutes and a full charge in under 45 minutes.
With a very attractive (and above all, slim) design, good performance, and standout cameras, the Huawei Mate X6 enters the market as one of the most interesting models in its category . It's true that the limited Google services and the lack of 5G are drawbacks, but overall, I think it's a very well-rounded smartphone that offers a very enjoyable user experience for those who like to consume multimedia content on a large screen. Of course, this comes at a price, and not a small one: the Huawei Mate X6 is priced at €1.999 , which is still a significant investment and only suitable for those with deep pockets eager to get their hands on foldable technology. It's up to you to decide if it's worth it.
