How to update an LG Smart TV, what model do I have?

After the appearance of serious security problems that allowed hackers to take control of certain models of LG Smart TVs, the brand quickly released a series of updates to fix the problems. However, despite having everything under control, there are still users who are unaware of the TV update process, so in this article we are going to explain everything you need to know about how to update an LG TV.

What TV model do I have?

The first thing you should know is that today you can find two types of TVs LG smart phones. The brand made an operating system change several years ago when it acquired webOS, so there are TVs with an old operating system called Netcast and another more modern one called webOS.

Differentiating them is quite simple, since their appearance is revealing:

  • This is Netcast:

LG Netcast

  • And this is webOS:

Another step that you should take into account is knowing exactly what TV model you have, since over the years the brand has launched numerous generations of Smart TVs. There are many different ranges that determine panel type (LED or OLED), inch size and included functions, so identifying it will be important to know which update you should install in case you need to do it manually.

The easiest way to find out which model you have is by accessing the TV's settings menu. Do the following:

  • Enter the settings menu by pressing the gear icon of your remote control.
  • Navigate to the section General.
  • Select option TV information.
  • In the first option you will see the field “Córdoba”, with the reference you needed.

Another solution is to look behind the television itself and look for the sticker with the barcodes. The model reference will appear at the top.

How to update the firmware

Update LG firmware

To update an LG Smart TV you will only have to visit the TV's settings menu to download the latest available firmware. You will obviously need the TV to be connected to the internet, otherwise the system will not be able to search for the latest available update.

If you have a TV with Netcast:

  • Press the button Settings on the remote control.
  • Depending on the model you have you will have to look for the icon Settings/Configuration or continue to the next step.
  • In the sidebar, go to the icon Option.
  • Within the options menu look for “Software update".
  • Press on updates or in System information and then in Wireless update.

If there is an update, the TV will update to the latest version available. Try to activate the “automatic updates” option so that your TV updates itself at all times.

If you have a TV with webOS:

  • Enter the menu adjustments.
  • Click on the option "About this TV".
  • There you will be able to see the current installed firmware.
  • Click on "Search for updates".

Don't forget to check the “Check for updates automatically” option so that the system is responsible for downloading and installing them automatically.
