DJI is back for another year with a product that continues to fit perfectly into its catalogue, because in addition to making good drones, if there is something that the brand does especially well, it is making good cameras. And taking into account the company's adventurous profile, how could it not have action cameras? Well, there are already 4 generations that we have seen so far, and just today they have presented the Osmo Action 5 Pro, a camera that wants to do much more than you imagine.
The Osmo Action of always?
There are no aesthetic changes. It's the same old Osmo Action. You'll find a compact body, smaller than a GoPro, with a front and rear screen, both of which are OLED and have touch controls, so you can control the menus from both the front and the back.
However, the main key is in its sensor and processor. These changes allow obtaining an image with a dynamic range capable of controlling 13.5 steps, which gives us very contrasted images with perfectly controlled changes in light, something that is especially striking when recording in 4K.
The processor, on the other hand, is a brain built with 4-nanometer technology that has incorporated intelligent people-tracking functions. This is very surprising, since the camera is responsible for detecting the person and centering them in the image, cropping the original 4K image to leave a final 2,7K video. As you can see, what the camera does is apply a crop to keep the scene with the person always centered in the image, a tracking that saves us from editing on the computer and helps to obtain perfect results immediately.
This processor also takes care of the energy consumption section, allowing sessions of up to 4 hours of use. This is something quite impressive as we have been able to verify it, achieving usage times quite close to four hours.
Very HDR image
In terms of image quality, the dynamic range speaks for itself. In this high-contrast cloudy scene the image is perfectly balanced, keeping the highlights and shadows in perfect equilibrium. Night shots still suffer, something that is quite common in this type of camera, while creative modes such as the high-speed mode at 240 fps are quite spectacular.
The Osmo Action 5's feature list is not short.
- We find the unmistakable color temperature sensor that will calibrate the image so that underwater videos come out with natural colors.
- We continue to enjoy the magnetic accessory mount, which is very convenient and practical to use, although we miss a tripod thread option.
- A pressure gauge has been included that can detect immersion in water. Thus, the camera is able to start recording the moment we submerge it and will stop recording when we get out, something quite practical considering that it is able to withstand up to 20 meters of depth without any additional protective case. In addition, using the official application, we can include graphics with data such as depth or G forces so that our videos have additional information with a couple of clicks.
- If the built-in microphone doesn't do the trick, you can pair the DJI Mic 2 via Bluetooth for the best possible audio, and you can even save backups with the built-in microphone to avoid any surprises.
- Its 47 GB of internal memory will allow you to record videos without needing to use microSD cards if you don't have one.
- Highlights can be marked in the recording preview
- Contents are transferred at high speed via WiFi 6.0 or via USB 3.0
- Possibility of recording in 10-bit and also 10-bit D-Log M.
In addition to all this, the camera has an endless arsenal of accessories, with which you can enjoy tripods, cases, supports and many other accessories to be able to record in all kinds of situations.
And now comes the important part. How much does it cost?
This Osmo Action 5 is priced at 379 euros, a basic pack that includes the camera, a battery, the mount to be able to record vertically and a pair of adapters. The adventure pack includes all of the above, a low-profile magnetic adapter, a 1,5-meter extendable arm and a battery case with which to charge 3 batteries at the same time. The price of this pack is 479 euros.
As you can see, the camera comes with a very aggressive price, since it is much lower than the new GoPro 13 Black, its main rival. But if you want to know the differences between one and the other, you better wait for us in the next video. However, in the meantime we can tell you that we really liked this Osmo Action 5 Pro, and we are sure that it will be very active this year.
