PlayStation Plus is a paid subscription service that appeared near the end of the PS3's life cycle. Although it initially offered only a few games each month, this Sony service has become an essential subscription if you want to get the most out of your PlayStation console . However, if you plan to keep your console turned off for a few months or don't intend to play online, we'll tell you how to quickly cancel your subscription.
How to cancel PlayStation Plus
Canceling your PlayStation Plus subscription is a quick and easy process . Sony is quite transparent about this and won't apply any penalties or surcharges, unlike some other services on the market outside the gaming sector.
You can perform this process from a browser or from your own console.
From a browser
- Log in with your account on the Sony website. Go to the section of Accounts administration.
- Click on Subscription, in the sidebar of the page.
- Click on «Stop Auto Renewal»in the PlayStation Plus section. With this, you will stop having access to the service when the last period you have paid ends and you will not receive the receipt for the following month.
From PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5
Doing the process on your computer is quick, but if you don't remember your PSN password it can be a real hassle. Luckily, there are ways to do it from the console itself.
- Go to Settings and select Users and Accounts.
- Choose Accounts, Subscriptions and Payments, navigate to Subscriptions and enter inside PlayStation Plus.
- You will get a screen where you can extend the subscription or stop auto renewal. By clicking on this second point, you will have canceled your subscription for the next month.
What happens if I cancel my PS Plus plan?
All subscription content downloaded to your console during your PlayStation Plus subscription period will no longer be available and you will be unable to use it. This means that all those games you downloaded for free and used to expand your digital library will no longer be accessible.
You will lose access to online multiplayer . You will lose the ability to download the games offered each month on the platform. You will also be unable to take advantage of discounts when purchasing from the store, and you will no longer be able to save your online game progress.
Will I lose my saved games?
Not necessarily , although there are exceptions. In the vast majority of cases, the games you've downloaded from PlayStation Plus will remain locked on your console until you decide to renew your subscription.
What you will lose is the automatic cloud save service . PlayStation Plus offers 100GB of cloud storage per user , which will no longer be available once you cancel your subscription.
However, this doesn't mean it's impossible to lose your save files . If your console malfunctions or if you're forced to perform a factory reset, you could lose your save data. It's possible to back up your save files manually, but keep in mind that some games don't allow you to copy save data to external storage (like a USB drive). This restriction exists in some games because some players could load save files onto a computer and edit them. This could give them an unfair advantage over other players, especially in online or competitive games.
How to activate PlayStation Plus
If, on the other hand, you need to sign up for PlayStation Plus again or it's your first time, Sony also makes the process quite easy.
Reregister PlayStation Plus
If you have only been absent for a few months, reactivating the service is as simple as going to the same section you used to cancel your subscription and requesting activation again.
You can do this from your computer using a browser or from your PS4 or PS5 console . You must follow the same steps explained in the "How to Cancel PlayStation Plus" section and click on the corresponding option.
Activate PlayStation Plus for the first time
Option A: Add a payment method (Card, Paypal...)
From the browser
- Go to the PlayStation Store website and log in with your account.
- Go to Online ID, Payment Management and add a new payment method. The options available in Spain are:
- Visa
- MasterCard
- American Express
– Operators: Orange and Movistar
- Paypal
- Paysafecard - Enter your payment details.
- Add it as method default payment if you want the service to renew automatically.
- In the console, go to PlayStation Store and purchase a subscription to PlayStation Plus.
From PS4 and PS5
- Access the menu Settings and go to Users and Accounts.
- Within Account go to Payment and Subscriptions. Go into Payment Methods.
- Add your data and mark the method as default if you wish.
- Access the PlayStation Store application and buy your subscription .
Option B: Using a PlayStation Store credit card
If you prefer to use PlayStation gift cards , the process is also very simple. There are cards available in denominations of €10, €20, and €50, which can be redeemed in the Sony store. They can be used to purchase the PlayStation Plus service as well as games and apps from the PlayStation Store.
You can buy the codes online or in any physical store. The procedure to redeem the code is as follows:
Web navigator:
- Go to the website of PlayStation Store and click on your avatar.
- Click again on Redeem codes.
- Write the code and press exchange.
- The credit will automatically be added to your PlayStation account.
From PS4
- Enter the app PlayStation Store.
- In side bar, go into Redeem codes.
- Enter the bar code that you have bought and then give exchange.
- The balance will be added to your account.
From PS5
- Sign in Settings and later Users and Accounts.
- Sign in Accounts, Payment and Subscriptions and finally in Redeem codes.
- Type the code and accept the dialogue to finish.
Once you have your balance in your account, enter the PlayStation Store application and buy the service as if it were another game.
Option C: Using a PlayStation Plus Gift Card
There are also 1 month, 3 month and 1 year PlayStation Plus subscription cards that you can buy at many large stores, electronics stores and websites.
They are activated both on the computer and on the console by following the same steps that we have explained in the previous point.
