Is it necessary to update my PS5?
Although at times this will be an optional task, you should ideally update your console immediately whenever an update becomes available. The latest versions of the system introduce corrections and patches on identified problems, so some problems that could be affecting you in your day-to-day life will normally be solved.
Many games include a system update by default so that the user is forced to install the version before being able to play, so on some occasions you could find this case.
In general, keeping your console up to date will help you avoid future problems, so it is recommended that you install the latest option available as soon as it is ready to download.
How is the PS5 updated?
The most common, practical and simple method is done through the internet, and for this you will only have to connect your console to your router so that the latest available version of the system can be downloaded. Normally, you will only have to turn on your console for the welcome screen to inform you about the availability of the update, so with a couple of clicks, you can start downloading the version and later it will be installed automatically.
How do you update the PS5 without internet? How do you update via USB?
If you don't have internet, don't worry. You can always update the console by installing the installation file via a USB stick. This method, however, is somewhat more cumbersome, so you will have to perform some additional steps and be careful.
To update your PS5 through a USB memory you will have to do the following steps:
- Prepare a USB drive formatted in FAT32 (if you have not installed any operating system with it, cleaning its contents and leaving it clean will suffice).
- Create a folder inside it called UPDATE

- You will get a file called PS5UPDATE. Move it to the UPDATE folder you created on the USB stick.
- The next step is to completely shut down your PS5 and start it in safe mode. To do this, press the power button and hold it until you hear a second beep.
- A menu will appear on the screen, and it will be there where you have to select the Reinstall system software option, and then the "Update from USB device" option. Accept and the update process will begin.

- We can now store PS5 games on USB storage drives. You must bear in mind that to run those games you must copy them back to the main storage of PS5.
- New accessibility features are added, such as Zoom, which allows you to enlarge areas of the screen.
- Added muting of game chat audio in the Sound control center. Once activated, the rest of the players will not hear you, nor will you be able to hear them. This does not affect group voice chats.
- You can now hide games from the game library, preventing them from appearing in the "Your Collection" tab.
- An Enable 120Hz output option has been included to force the mode on 120Hz compatible Full HD monitors.
- The same thing happens with HDR. In the Settings> Screen and Video> Video Output options, we will find the new HDR function to deactivate it in case a game is not compatible.
- Trophy screenshots are now kept in order, with the ability to choose what kind of screenshots you want to store in Settings > Captures & Streams > Trophies.
- Cloud saves will sync correctly. Now the console will ask if there is a more updated file to download to your console.
