Pokémon is already more than 25 years old. Over all these years, what started out as a long shot by Nintendo has become the most money-generating IP on the planet, with its video games only a small portion of its wild revenue, and most of it coming from the world. merchandising. Unlike other series, Pokémon video games have not had a great evolution over the years. The structure of the titles has been maintained generation after generation, demonstrating that it is based on a quality formula, but the continuity line makes die-hard fans of the series always ask for something more from Game Freak. In this article we will talk about the evolution of the Pokémon video game franchise in its main line throughout its most important titles.
Red, Green, Blue and Yellow: First Generation

The first generation of Pokémon came out in the Japanese country to principles of 1996 after about six years of development. They were published under the title Pocket monsters, and it was made in two editions: Red y Green. This strategy is said to have been devised by Shigeru Miyamoto, who thought that if two separate editions were made and it was not possible to get all the creatures in a single cartridge, collecting pocket monsters would be favored using the Cable Link, a accessory that was used to interconnect two Game Boy consoles. Collecting was the basic mechanic that Satoshi Tajiri had devised, which was inspired by his own childhood collecting and trading insects to create the bases of what we know today as Pokémon.
La mechanics presented in Pocket monsters in 1996. It has remained almost unchanged to this day.. In the original titles we put ourselves in the shoes of Satoshi (Red or Red in the western versions), and we had to travel through the region of Kanto to catch their creatures, face gym leaders and defeat the Elite Four while completing the Pokémon encyclopedia for Professor Oak, which consisted of a total of 150 Pokémon (151 counting Mew, which was originally a secret within the game's code.)

The two original titles garnered some success. A few months later it would come out in Japan Pokémon Blue, a version of Red y Green polished version that was distributed to subscribers to CoroCoro magazine. This version, much simpler at the programming level, served to create the western versions that here we met as Pokémon Red y Pokémon Blue.
Prior to the release of the second generation, Nintendo, Creatures, and Game Freak released Pokémon Yellow, whose mission was to extend the life of gameboy and create a larger base of players willing to buy Pokémon Gold y Silver. Pokémon Yellow It is, in essence, the same game, but adapting its plot to that of the animated series.
After the release of the third generation (and before Emerald), these early versions of Pokémon had a remake for Game Boy Advance, called pokemon fire red y Pokémon LeafGreen. These versions not only had better graphics, but added all the improvements that had been implemented in Rubí y zafiro. She vitaminized herself with a huge post game full of islands with a lot of extra content and the game incorporated a device to communicate the Game Boy Advance wirelessly, to replace the obsolete Cable Link.
More recently, it was also redone second remake of these titles for Nintendo Switch, specifically from Pokémon Yellow with the titles Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu y Pokémon Let's Go Eevee, two games with simplified mechanics for younger players who had entered the Pokémon universe with games like Pokémon Go.

Gold, Silver and Crystal: Second Generation

In 1999, one year after Pokémon Yellow, the Japanese had in their hands the second generation of Pokémon. We Europeans would not see Pokémon Gold y Pokémon Silver until 2001. These titles were exclusive to Game Boy Color.

On this occasion, the development was completely identical, but we would tour the region of Johtowhere would we find 100 new Pokémon that were added to the 151 of the previous generation. Despite these games having similar graphics, the gameplay improved exponentially. The game scenes were made in color. He internal clock of the cartridge allowed day and night cycles, as well as weekly events. In addition, by defeating the High Command and the champion, we could get on a ship and visit the ancient kanto region, being these games and their remakes the only titles in the entire saga to maintain this structure.
But the thing did not stop there. Very interesting mechanics were added, such as the growth of berries, the possibility of equipping objects to Pokémon, the mobile phone or the most important: the arrival of two new types: steel and sinister, to balance a metagame which was completely broken because of the psychic type Pokémon.
It would be released shortly after crystal pokemon, which would show a kind of director's cut using the same base to tell a parallel story through the legendary Pokémon Suicune. Crystal It had many improvements at an aesthetic and mechanical level, although the novelty that the players liked the most was that for the first time you could choose a girl to live the adventure. According to Game Freak, this was going to be a possibility already in the original games, but it was removed due to not having enough space in the cartridges to program the dialogues in male and female. Crystal It didn't sell badly, but it was still the same game with some improvements. However, Game Freak would continue to repeat this play of relaunching repeated titles to extend generations.

A decade later, after the launch of the fourth generation, Gold y Silver were remade for the Nintendo DS under the titles Pokemon HeartGold y pokemon soulsilver. These two versions also include part of the Eusine plot that we saw in crystal pokemon, and They are considered the two best editions of Pokémon that have been made so far. thanks to the way in which they were adapted, the graphic quality and its huge map full of content and mysteries.

Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald: Third Generation

The third generation of Pokémon arrived on the Game Boy Advance in mid- 2003 (at the end of 2002 in Japan), premiering a new graphic style —let's remember that the first and second generation shared an engine and reached the end of the Game Boy's life cycle.
En Rubí y zafiro They were added 135 new creatures, bringing the total to 386. However, for the first time, the Pokédex we had to complete in Hoenn was smaller. In fact, until they were launched Red fire, Green leaf and the Pokémon titles for the Game Cube, many of the first and second generation Pokémon could not be obtained with the original game cartridges. Rubí y zafiro.

Pokémon underwent a major mechanical revolution this generation. The Pokémon's hidden stat scoring system was redesigned—although it wouldn't take shape until the Nintendo DS titles—and more elements were added to the game. metagame: The natures and special abilities. Nature was used to add more variety to creatures, boosting one trait and weakening another at the same time. On the other hand, the special abilities made it possible for the Pokémon to be used with more creative strategies. Also added were double bouts, as well as the inclusion of climates, which can be summoned by the Pokémon or can simply affect the combat depending on the weather factors in which we are fighting. would also appear pokemon contests, which would carry more weight here than in future games.
A couple of years later, Pokemon Emerald would repeat the play of Yellow y Crystal. This time, the game merged the stories of Ruby and Sapphire with their villains, Team Aqua and Team Magma. It's a more interesting game than the originals, but the number of improvements pales in comparison. Of course, it also has a post game quite varied.
In the year 2014, Game Freak released a remake of these two titles for Nintendo 3DS, even though it might have been considered unnecessary. Interesting gen XNUMX mechanics were added and the plot was dug a bit deeper, but in a very subtle and low-risk way. The reception was good, but it did not reach the standards that they had previously set heartgold y soulsilver.
Third generation marked the golden age of Pokémon. Rubí/zafiro, Fire Red/Leaf Green y Emerald they became the top 3 best selling games for Game Boy Advance.

Diamond, Pearl and Platinum: Fourth Generation

We got to Nintendo DS, where we could play Pokémon Diamond y Pearl in the summer of 2007 in our country. Sinnoh would be the scenario in which Game Freak would explain the genesis of the Pokémon world, with 135 new creatures and pretentious team of villains.
The great improvement of this generation at the playable level was somewhat hidden. To add more variety to the Pokémon, the structure of the genetics and effort system of the creatures was finished, as well as physical attacks were separated from special ones. Now, whether the attacks were of one class or another no longer depended on the type of the Pokémon, thus creating a great revolution within the game. metagame that went unnoticed, although many players noticed that changes had been made, without really understanding the differences from past titles.
Furthermore, the artistic section He had a big jump, but it wasn't entirely positive. Diamond y Pearl they were tremendously slow and poorly optimized games. The loading of the zones was terrible, and it was quite common to suffer hangs and jerks during the gameplay. Also featured in these titles was GTS, which allowed Pokémon to be traded with trainers from all over the world, as well as battle with them.

Despite being games loved by the community, Diamond y Pearl they proved that Game Freak had neglected their titles for the first time. They arrived quite late, the story was quite absurd and the bad optimization and the low variety of wild creatures invited many players to leave the saga right after the release of these titles.
A year later it would arrive Platinum, with a much more polished design and a more interesting story - if you want to play a fourth generation game, it is advisable to go directly to this one.
Luckily, Game Freak was able to redeem himself by launching the remakes second generation, already with a much more perfected engine, and cleaning up part of the impression they gave Pearl y Diamond sus in the beginning.

More than a decade later, the Nintendo Switch received the remake of these two titles: Pokemon Shiny Diamond y Shimmering Pearl. The development was carried out by an independent studio, and at an artistic level it does not match what we would see later in the eighth generation. It was a 1:1 remake of the original with better graphics, but a rather disappointing art direction that proved that the original XNUMXth generation titles are still more interesting to play.

White, Black, White 2 and Black 2: Fifth Generation

Game Freak took a risk in the fifth generation. However, his obsession with numbers would end up tarnishing what is objectively one of the best modern generations of Pokémon.
Starting from an evolved engine of the fourth generation, pokemon white version y pokemon black version They arrived in 2010 on a Nintendo DS that was no longer giving. We started in the region of Unova (Unova) with nothing more and nothing less than 156 new Pokémon —more even than in the original games. This encouraged exploring and collecting information on an ecosystem that offered new creatures on all sides. Still, the editions Blanco y Black They made the same mistake as Pearl and Diamond, offering little variety of wild Pokémon on each route, although this was a decision made by Junichi Masuda himself, who wanted to give the game a facelift by offering only new Pokémon, and leaving for a moment back to the creatures of other regions.

Even so, Unova (based on the United States, the first region of Pokémon that is not inspired by Japan) would become the setting for the more adult plot that we have been able to see in the main line of Pokémon. A team of villains that seems to fight for the liberation of Pokémon, a family organization, an introduction to the game with a cinematic that has nothing to do with Pokémon, and a rather truly chaotic and well-scripted denouement.
The story would continue a couple of years later in Pokémon White Version 2 / Black Version 2, with much more innovation. Instead of showing us the same game with changed details, these two new editions were quite one. sequel what's going on Two years later from the original game, where we will take the hero who will save Unova from the resurgence of the Team Plasma. The game also knew how to distance itself from the first part by starting the adventure in a new town to the north of the map, so the route we must follow in the sequel is different, thus minimizing the possibility of appearing repetitive.
So much Blanco y Black Like its sequels, they are games full of content, with a lot of exploration and interesting creatures. The connectivity of the games was improved, adding multiple services that served to enhance the gameplay, such as Pokémon Dream World, which allowed you to obtain hidden special abilities in Pokémon through a cloud service.

It cannot be said that they had poor sales, but Game Freak seems to have not reaped the success they expected for all the enthusiasm they put into these four titles. Even so, this can be due to multiple factors, such as the exhaustion caused by the previous generation or the piracy boom of Nintendo DS, which could seriously affect the sales of these titles. Another reason that also notably sank these games was the issue of not having integrated Pokémon from previous generations -it was done in the sequel as part of the postgame. Although it was a very smart decision, many of those who played these titles at the time strongly criticized this change, so Game Freak would not hesitate to take a step back in subsequent generations. Now, years later, older gamers have begun to appreciate the value of this generation and the risk that Masuda assumed at the time when he saw the difference in quality between this generation and the most recent ones.

X and Y: Sixth Generation

The sixth generation of Pokémon would end up setting the basis of all the videogames in the saga that followed. From Pokémon X y pokemon y, each generation has included a unique mechanics which is only available to a limited extent in said video games. In these editions, we would know the phenomenon of megaevolution, but in the following they would be followed by the Z attacks and the Dinamax. In addition, a new elemental type was also added for the first time since XNUMXnd generation: the fairy type. This was done to balance the metagame, subtracting dragon, dark and fighting prominence, as well as giving more power to poison and steel type creatures.

The region of Kalos, inspired by France, would bring us only 72 new pokemon. Despite this, they were quite versatile and interesting creatures. In addition, modifications were made to old Pokémon to which the fairy type was added. With this, the total number of creatures in this generation rose to 721.

Pokémon X y pokemon y were the first two Game Freak titles for the Nintendo 3DS. They arrived in the fall 2013. In these editions a smooth jump to 3D would be made. The games allowed the character to be freely controlled with the Joystick or move to the crosshead, returning to an obsolete system of movement by grids. The story would also lose a lot of weight, returning to a rather superficial and unintriguing plot, taking a certain step back in that regard.
However, the megaevolution It was a breakthrough for the series. Some Pokémon could temporarily evolve in combat into an improved version of themselves, with better stats, changed special abilities, and even changed elemental types in some cases. Thanks to this, we were able to see alternative designs of Charizard (Mega X and Mega Y) or Mewtwo among many others.
A year later, taking advantage of the same graphics engine, the third generation remakes: Pokemon Alpha Sapphire y omega ruby. Its great novelty was to include the mega evolutions here as well. However, the remake is objectively worse than the original game and is also subpar in quality. X e Y.

Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon: Seventh Generation

A couple of years later, in 2016, Game Freak took a risk again. Sol y Moon teleported us to Alola, an archipelago based in Hawaii with its own rhythm and philosophy of life. There were no gyms or medals or a High Command as such. Instead, we would have to do the 'island tour', a kind of challenge through the islands where we would be tested in multiple ways.
But it was not the only change. In fact, Sol y Moon are the strangest pokemon games out there within the main line —without this being negative, of course. Another very significant change was the regional forms, that is, Pokémon that we know from other regions but that have a different appearance in Alola. This is the case of the Alola Exeggutor, which is a giant palm tree, the ice-type Vulpix or the alternative and sinister version of Meowth, to name a few. This change would be maintained in subsequent editions, offering new variations of creatures already known in the following regions. Alola would contribute 88 new creatures and raising the global Pokédex to the 809 Pokémon in total.

La exclusive mechanics de Pokémon Sun y Moon are Z-moves. Basically, they are techniques that we are learning during the island tour that allow our Pokémon to make an extra attack per fight beyond the four that we have been able to use as a limit throughout our lives.
The story wasn't bad at all either. The typical "colleague" of previous games was preserved, but we were shown a rather interesting team of villains and another group of characters, the Aether Foundation, with somewhat questionable purposes whose leader was the mother of the protagonist's friend. In this title we were also introduced to the Ultra Beasts, a series of Pokémon from Ultraspace. It would also change another classic Pokémon mechanic: for the first time we would say goodbye to Hidden Machines (MO) and we would use the PokeMounts.

Sol y Moon They were two very good Pokémon titles that we could rate even with a notable high despite the fact that the Nintendo 3DS could barely handle them. However, a year later, Game Freak would reuse his assets to bring us a kind of director's cut Sol y Moon which would be all nonsense: pokemon ultra sun y pokemon ultramoon. These two titles were identical to the originals, only changing fragments of the plot for modified ones, which alter the story and make the entire final montage completely meaningless. The subject of the Ultra Beasts would also be dealt with a little more in depth —in the original game they had been dealt with in a very quick and superficial way as a way of post game done in haste and haste—but without a doubt, UltraSun y ultramoon They are two of the worst games in the entire saga, since not only do they add nothing, but they also dirty the good work that had been done with the original games.

Sword and Shield: Eighth Generation

After a few years in which Nintendo Switch only saw the remake de Pokémon Yellow, at the end of 2019 what would be the eighth generation of the franchise was launched for the Nintendo hybrid console, which would bring with it 89 new Pokémon and would bring the total number up to 898.

The history of Pokemon Sword y Escudo happens in Galar, a region based on England. The video game recovered the gym system of a lifetime, but gave them a facelift with the new mechanics that appeared in this generation, the phenomenon dynamax. In Galar, Pokémon battles take place in big stadiums around the entire region, winking at English football. During battles, Trainers can use an energy that turns their Pokémon into giants for 3 turns. Some only change their size (Dinamax) and others also see their designs affected (Gigantamax). In addition, new ones would also be added Galar Regional Pokémon, exactly the same as previously done in Alola.
The editions of Sword y Escudo They were highly anticipated at the time, as the Nintendo Switch looked like an orphaned console without a mainline Pokémon game. However, these two titles left a lot to be desired. The development was very green —the game was even full of bugs at its launch—, the scenarios were just that, scenarios, that is, sets. The exploration was reduced to a minimum and as if that were not enough, the games had two paid DLCs to expand on content that should have initially been in the launch game.
Still, all the base on which the game is organized It is good. In fact, the first few hours of the title are interesting, and the Galar versions of the Pokémon are also pretty cool. But it seemed that Game Freak went to the exam settling for a pass. Not only the graphics of this game are quite disappointing, but so was its plot, completely empty and devoid of any mystery.
At the beginning of 2021, Game Freak showed the world its new developments for Nintendo Switch. First, they announced two remakes de Pearl y Diamond that they would not be within this generation, and that they would be developed independently by ILCA.
On the other hand, Game Freak would focus its efforts on Pokemon Legends: Arceus, a semi-open world title that would be released at the end of January 2022. The game would take us back in time, to the Hisui region, where people and Pokémon have not yet established friendship bonds and where creatures that are extinct today still exist. . Although at first, this game was considered as a spin off, the way in which The Pokémon Company has treated this title makes us think that it is part of the main game saga. Pokémon Legends: Arceus is a title that focuses purely on gameplay. In it, we move freely through numerous scenarios with Pokémon that no longer enter into combat, but confront us directly in the open world. Its main mechanic is capturing Pokémon in the purest Pokémon GO style. Another great addition to this game were the Hisui forms, Pokémon that existed in the past, but died out for one reason or another.
Scarlet and Purple: Ninth Generation

La ninth generation of Pokémon premiered in November 2022, a few months after the closure of the eighth with Pokemon Legends: Arceus. Scarlet y Purple They take us to Paldea, a region based in Spain. The idea of these titles was none other than to continue with the open world approach started in the Legends, but focused on the system that we have seen all our lives with the games of the main saga.
We will begin our adventure by customizing our trainer. Shortly after, Professor Carnation will give us our first Pokémon in his mansion, which can be Spirigatito, Fuecoco or Quaxly. Clavel will welcome us to the Orange / Grape School, and he will introduce us to our class representative, Mencía, with whom we will have our first fight. After beating him, Mencía will lend himself to guide us through our adventure and measure himself in combat against us from time to time.

During our journey to Plateau City, our character will suffer a small mishap and will be saved by Koraidon or Miraidon. The dragon will be very weak, but he will accompany us as a thank you for having fed him. Later, he will become a PokeMount, so we can use it to move at high speed through Paldea by land, sea and air.
Once in the capital of the region, they will give us the three objectives of the game, although there are really four:
- victory cruise: or rather, the challenge of the gyms. It is the classic challenge of Pokémon. There are 8 leaders in Paldea that we must challenge to get their medals. Once achieved, we will face each other in the Pokémon League to obtain the rank of champion. For the first time, we will not be able to challenge the High Command again once the adventure is over.
- The Stardust Way: It is a special mission that is entrusted to us by a mysterious character through our RotomDex. The Star Team is a group of students from the school who do not attend classes and who are causing some ruckus for Paldea. We will have to stop the feet of their five leaders in their different bases.
- legendary path: This is the mission that Damián entrusts us with. This character is the son of Professor Albora in Scarlet, and the son of Professor Turo in Purple. He knows the dragon, but he wants nothing to do with it because, according to what he says, it ruined his life. We will help Damien in his search for spices by fighting Dominant Pokémon.
- Treasure hunt: This mission is given to us by Professor Clavel, the director of the Orange Academy. It's like a final year project. It does not tell us what it is about, but without a doubt, it is the most interesting part of this game.

During this generation, the main mechanic is the Teracrystallization. Using the Teracrystal Orb that Mencía gives us, we can activate our Pokémon's teratype. Once per fight, and whenever the orb is charged, we will activate a transformation that will change our Pokémon's secondary type to its teratype. This gives a lot of play, since each Pokémon can have any teratype (of the 18 types that are in Pokémon), thus acquiring new strengths and weaknesses during combat. If our Pokémon's teratype matches its type, the bonus obtained by making attacks of the same type (STAB) will be increased.
Regarding the new pokemon, we have several news beyond the new creatures typical of this region:
- Paldea Shapes: Pokémon that we already knew, but that have a special form in Paldea.
- New third evolutions: Some creatures like Primeape or Bisharp, which had lost some attractiveness at a competitive level, have found new evolutionary forms in Paldea.
- converging forms: Pokémon that look like creatures from the first generation, but have come to that form by pure convergent evolution, just like in nature. This is the case of Wigglet or Toedscool.
- pokemon paradox: not to do spoilers, we will simply say that they are the creatures that live in the Paldea Pit.
Returning to the main plot, for the first time in Pokémon, we are not facing a "corridor" route, but we are free to choose the order of our adventure. However, there are some barriers in Paldea that will try to prevent us from breaking the game. Paradoxically, one of the main problems with the title is that it is not clear enough when it comes to guiding us on the adventure. Scarlet and Purple they have a running order—you can always ask a Nurse Joy at a service stop to shed light on you—so it's pretty common to skip events. Hence, many people look for the order of game events, which we leave you in the following image (without spoilers, don't worry about that).

According to the valuation of titles, we have one of the most divided opinions in the entire history of the saga. Scarlet and Purple were well appreciated by the press, with notes that exceeded the notable and on many occasions, obtaining the outstanding. However, when it really hit the mainstream, Pokémon fans split into two camps. The ninth generation Pokémon games came out for the Nintendo Switch in a quite premature state. The titles were riddled with bugs —mostly graphic, but also some technical ones. To this we had to add the performance problems of the games, with constant frame drops, and graphics that still did not convince the majority.
To this we must add that this generation loses part of the pokemon essence. The cities and towns of Paldea are mere decorations. You cannot interact with NPCs. Fights with trainers are optional, and we can run away from them once they start. Definitely, Scarlet y Purple They are entertaining games, but quite shocking compared to the franchise's past.

What are the best games to start in Pokémon?

There is usually quite a bit of debate about which are the best Pokémon games. In most cases, you will find people who will tell you that the latest releases are not exactly the best.
Choosing one title or another is a matter of taste. It almost always depends on the type of player you are and the experience what are you looking for:
- If you're looking for game to start, any of the recent releases will work for you. Pokémon has always been characterized as a game that doesn't require you to be an expert to pass the story —it's another thing to play at a competitive level. Any title for Nintendo Switch is suitable for players who want to take their first steps in the franchise, whatever their age. However, if the only contact you have with Pokémon is Pokémon GO, our recommendation is to start with Pokémon Let's GO Pikachu / Eevee for Nintendo Switch. It is a remake of Pokémon Yellow with limitations, but very well worked.
- On the other hand, if you want to enjoy a complete adventure, there are two titles that you should try yes or yes:
- Pokémon HeartGold/Soulsilver: By far, the best remakes in the history of the franchise. They are long games, very well resolved and with the best graphics. They are Nintendo DS games, but they have aged very well.
- Pokémon Black/White and its sequels: in total, four very well resolved titles, with more adult stories and graphics that are the best that Game Freak has achieved (the pixel art of this game is for many the culmination of this graphic style).
- We can't forget either Pokemon Emerald, which not only has an interesting story, but also has a very fun postgame with the Battle Front.

However, it is not necessary that you stay with the main saga either. Some Pokemon games are totally unknown to some fans. It is the case of Pokémon Colosseum y Pokemon XD, the two titles for GameCube developed by Genius Sonority that showed that outstanding games can be made without going through the typical medal and Pokémon league run of traditional games.
